Edwin Tong: Nine Emperor Gods Festival an important tradition reflecting Singapore's multicultural spirit
- Today (Oct 18) is the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, and ceremonies were held at multiple Nine Emperor Gods temples across the island to send off the deities.
- Speaking at one of the events, Minister for Law & Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong said the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is an important traditional custom in Singapore and reflects the multicultural spirit of mutual respect and harmonious co-existence among the country's different religions.
- Edwin Tong said: "The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is something that represents Singapore and is a very distinctive part of our culture. So I think we need to preserve it, attract more young people to take part, and, whenever possible, safeguard it well so that the next generation of Singaporeans can come to know it."
